Calls to provide Leopard tanks to Ukraine are heard on the streets of Dusseldorf

3 min read

On Saturday, January 21, several hundred activists marched through the streets of Düsseldorf, calling on the German government to provide Ukraine with Leopard 2 battle tanks.

The Union of Activists, "People's Democracy Front "Ukraine" (FND "Ukraine"), organized a demonstration and marched in the German city of Dusseldorf on the occasion of the Day of Unity of Ukraine. The event was held to thank the entire civilized world for its solidarity and support, as well as to remind us that Ukraine's struggle against the aggressor continues.

The day before the rally, the results of the Ramstein 8 meeting were announced, whereas politicians did not agree on the supply of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. Therefore, not only unity but also the provision of weapons to Ukraine, in particular Leopard 2 battle tanks, became a cornerstone theme in the slogans that were heard, as well as in the speeches of German politicians and Ukrainian activists during the event.

The only way to stop modern Russia, which understands only the language of force, is through the victory of the Ukrainian army on the battlefield in Ukraine, according to the organizers from the Ukraine Foundation. Delaying the supply of weapons to Ukraine means endangering the population of not only one European country - Ukraine - but the whole of Europe.

One of the speakers, Rolf Fliss, a Green Party member of the city council and mayor of Essen, emphasized the importance of confronting Russia not only through democratic means but also by supplying weapons to Ukraine.

"Ukrainians are fighting not only for their freedom but for the freedom of the whole of Europe and democracy itself. That is why Germany must strengthen Ukraine with weapons, both Cheetah and Marder tanks, as well as Leopard 1 and Leopard 2," he said.

Chairman of the Board of the NGO "We are Europe!", Jens Baganz, called on the German government to provide Ukraine with all the weapons it can. "This should happen now, and these weapons should be enough for Ukraine to win this war," emphasized Mr. Baganz.

The position of the NGO "We are Europe!" is supported not only by speeches but also by actual actions in support of Ukraine. Thus, We are Europe! initiated the preparation of an international petition, "Chancellor Scholz, free the Leopards!" among activists from five European countries, calling for the prompt delivery of Leopard tanks to Ukraine, and submitted it to the Bundestag. It is expected to be published for signature soon.
