UN Secretary General alarmed by situation in Ukraine

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has today said that he is alarmed by the severe escalation of the situation in eastern Ukraine, and has implored all sides to make good on their commitments under the Minsk Protocol and Memorandum, reads a UN statement.

"The Secretary-General [stressed that] the further deterioration of a situation that has led to heavy loss of life and civilian suffering must be avoided at all costs," reads the document.

He demanded that the first step be "an immediate and full cessation of hostilities" as it "threatened to completely unravel a hard-won September 2014 cease-fire."

As reported earlier, the UN Security Council is to hold a meeting on the Ukrainian crisis on January 21. It was initiated by the Lithuanian delegation.
