Poroshenko suggests withdrawing veto right from UN Security Council permanent members

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko believes that the time is not right to discuss the changes in the way the UN Security Council operates, but has said that the withdrawal of the veto right from its permanent members will make this agency's work more efficient.

In an interview with the Australian channel ABC, when asked if he had enough confidence in the United Nations, especially the Security Council, given that Russia is one of the permanent members, the Ukrainian president said: "We should be absolutely frank and straightforward: the conflict in the east of Ukraine demonstrates the ineffectiveness of the post-War global security system, including the Security Council of the United Nations. And it happens if one of the permanent members who has a veto right is an aggressor."

According to Poroshenko, there should be developed a new system which will be able to stop this very dangerous development of the situation in the whole world.

At the same time, the president expressed his doubt that it was the right time to discuss the changes in the Security Council.

"I doubt that we are ready now to discuss publicly the way how the Security Council should be changed. Maybe we should withdraw the veto right from the permanent member," Poroshenko said.
