Donetsk mayor denies rumors of contemplating resignation

1 min read

Donetsk Mayor Oleksandr Lukyanchenko has denied claims that he is stepping down.

"I am at work and continue controlling the city's life support systems. I see such claims as a provocation which aim to upset stability in the city," says a posting on the mayor's official website on Monday.

Lukyanchenko said there are no Right Sector people in the city.

"False rumors are being circulated in the city. Some claim the water has been poisoned, while others that the Right Sector has arrived. I am saying officially that the water in Donetsk matches all standards and that it is monitored on an hourly basis. There are no Right Sector militants in the city, either," he said and urged Donetsk residents not to trust rumors.

He acknowledged, however, that the situation is tense in the city.

"Such reports have been circulating in the city for more than two months. But all clashes and inconveniences have so far been initiated by residents of Donetsk and the region," the posting says.

All of the city's services are working in an orderly manner, he said. "Schools, hospitals, enterprises and transport services are operating according to schedule," it says.
