One person was killed in the city of Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, on Thursday after participants in a pro-Russian rally attacked participants in a rally "For a United Ukraine!", the healthcare department of the Donetsk regional administration said on its Web site.

"The victim is a 22-year-old man, a resident of Donetsk. He died from a knife wound en route to the hospital," it said.

"All in all, 17 people have requested medical care. Two of them were treated by doctors on the spot and were allowed to go home. Another two were admitted to a regional hospital's injury treatment department," the department said.

Ukraine's online newspaper Donbass News, for its part, reported two fatalities as a result of the clashes in Donetsk.

"Two deaths have been confirmed. As far as another person is concerned, it is unknown whether he is alive or dead. Another one is in serious condition and is now undergoing an operation. Two more are in critical condition. At least 50 people were injured," according to a tweet, which was posted on the newspaper's Web site on Thursday evening.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's Web site TSN reported three fatalities, citing its own sources.

According to Ihor Slavhorodsky, head of the Donetsk regional branch of the Svoboda (Freedom) Party, one of the persons who died during the clashes was the organization's activist and spokesman Dmytro Cherniavsky.

"Svoboda member Dmytro Cherniavsky is among those who died in Donetsk today," Slavhorodsky said on his Facebook page.

The clashes erupted between participants in a rally "For a United Ukraine" and pro-Russian activists in Donetsk's Lenin Square on Thursday.

Pro-Russian activists started throwing firecrackers, eggs and stun grenades at their opponents. Policemen tried to take pro-Ukrainian demonstrators away from the scene in a police bus, but pro-Russian activists pelted the bus with firecrackers and smashed its windows.
