Merkel condemns escalation of conflict in Ukraine

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has condemned the escalation of violence in Ukraine, her spokesman told reporters on Thursday.

"She strongly condemns the recent escalation (of the conflict in Ukraine)," he said.

The spokesman said that the German chancellor asked Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to accept the European Union's proposal to act as a mediator in the talks with the opposition.
