Lutsenko says he still opposes Yanukovych's policies

Former Ukrainian Interior Minister Yuriy Lutsenko has said that he still opposes the current Ukrainian government led by President Viktor Yanukovych.

"I am still critical of the president. And I believe that 'Yanukovych's Ukraine' is not the country in which people want to live. Because it is terrifying to be born, it is terrifying to be looking for work, and it is even more terrifying to die in this country. In my last plea at the final court hearing, I did not surrender a single comma from my principled position regarding personally Yanukovych and his government. Another matter is that perhaps I have started saying more complex things. Because I really believe that [removing one] person is a simple but inadequate solution to the problems of Ukraine. We need to change the president, but this is insufficient condition for changing the country," he said in an interview with TVi Channel on Monday night.

Lutsenko also said he did not intend to take revenge on those who were behind his prosecution.

"I believe that they have already stolen two years, three months and a few days from me, for me to continue to steal the time, which is given to me to live, for such a thing as revenge [is senseless]. Because, vengeance is counterproductive, it just takes your time. I believe that I should work now exclusively on constructive matters. I have never sued those who launched criminal charges against me, which I won in courts. I do not intend to settle scores with anyone now," he said.

"The only thing I cannot guarantee is the impunity of those who are destroying the country and me in particular. But I am not going to personally launch these cases," Lutsenko said adding that he meant Ukraine's First Deputy Prosecutor General Renat Kuzmin, and those, who ordered criminal cases against opposition figures.

"I believe that those who ordered [the cases] - the leadership of the presidential administration and its chief, they should be held accountable. But I will not be the one to bring them to justice. This will be the next generation of fair society, judges and prosecutors. Today, it seems improbable, but this will happen," Lutsenko said.
