Ukraine has proposed several areas of cooperation to the UN leadership with regard to the protection of the environment, the press service of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported on Wednesday.

These issues were discussed at a meeting between Ukrainian Ambassador to Kenya and Tanzania, Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-HABITAT) Volodymyr Butiaha, an adviser to Ukrainian Environment and Natural Resources Minister, Ihor Markelov, and UN Deputy Secretary General and UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner.

"The Ukrainian side has proposed several areas of cooperation for consideration by the UN's leadership. The main one is the continuation of a joint project to study the effects of radiation on biodiversity in the Chornobyl zone, which is the first joint large-scale environmental project of the UNEP and the Environment Ministry in five years, which will be implemented in Ukraine," reads the statement.

Steiner, in turn, welcomed the opportunity to launch the project of technical assistance by the UNEP on the development of a strategy for sustainable consumption and production in Ukraine.

She also supported Ukraine's initiative to strengthen the positions of the UNEP in Ukraine and the possibility of the opening of the UNEP's office in the country.
