Ukraine retains right to be named state of big science, says Azarov

Ukraine sets the tone in the world scientific community in a number of spheres, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has said.

"Scientific researches of Ukrainian institutes and laboratories in many cases determine the way for development of science and technology tomorrow and not only in our country. In some spheres Ukraine sets the tone for the world scientific community," the premier said at a ceremony to award the laureates of the state award in the sphere of science and technology 2011 in Kyiv on Tuesday.

He added that Ukraine preserves the right to be named a state of big science.

"Possibilities of Ukrainian scientists and engineers, scientific results of the world level are not just something for being proud of, they also form a strong basis for economic sovereignty of our country," he said.

The premier noted that Ukraine has huge resources for development and the government has to assist scientific researches, as well as stimulate innovative processes in the economy and increase prestige of science.

"Ukraine has to carry out a number of unexampled difficult and big tasks. In the coming years we have to pass from mostly raw-material orientation of the national economy to a modern knowledge economy," Azarov said.

The premier awarded 184 scientists. Twenty scientific projects were presented with state prizes in the sphere of science and technology.
