Ukraine ready to improve legal system according to EU recommendations, says Azarov

Ukraine will take into account recommendations of the European Union on improvement of its legal system and in this context the authorities are ready to cooperate and reach a compromise with the opposition, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov has said.

According to the Ukrainian government's press service, Azarov said this at a meeting with former Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski and former European Parliament President Pat Cox in Kyiv on December 18.

In general, Ukraine thinks that recent evaluations of the situation in the country by the EU Foreign Affairs Council and the European Parliament are positive, according to the premier.

"We will focus on the recommendations on improvement of Ukraine's legal system, particularly the election system," Azarov said.

He also stressed that the government is ready to reach a compromise with the opposition during this work.

In turn, Cox said that if the EU decides to prolong work of the European observation mission he and Kwasniewski are ready to support the issue.

"We could make our contribution into building of a dialogue that could speed up the signing of the Association Agreement," Cox said.

Ukrainian premier expressed support to the envoys' initiative.

Kwasniewski also mentioned the countries that have joined the EU not long ago – Poland and Baltic countries – "where all political forces united efforts in order to implement necessary reforms."
