EU expects Ukraine to implement ECHR's rulings, says Ashton
The European Union expects Ukraine to implement all rulings of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
"We expect the Ukrainian authorities to express a clear commitment to the early implementation of all judgments of the European Court of Human Rights," European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Fule read aloud EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton's address to the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday, December 12.
Ashton noted that "the recent final judgment of the ECHR on the unlawful and arbitrary detention of [former Interior Minister of Ukraine] Yuriy Lutsenko has also confirmed our concerns."
The EU also expressed hope that Kyiv will take into account recommendations by the Council of Europe related to detention conditions and medical assistance to persons in detention.
