Poroshenko signs law regulating legal regime of territory contaminated after Chornobyl disaster

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has signed the law ‘On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine regarding the settlement of certain issues of the legal regime of the territories affected by radioactive contamination as a consequence of the Chornobyl disaster," according to the press service of the head of state.

The document specifies the characteristics of land use, special use of water, the implementation of urban development activities, protection of atmospheric air on the territory of the Exclusion Zone and ultimate (obligatory) resettlement to ensure the implementation of projects for the transformation of the Shelter object into an ecologically safe system and the reintegration of the affected area.

The law also regulates the competence issues of the central and local governments to implement the powers in the exclusion zone.

At the same time, the decree of the Ukrainian president dated April 26, 2016 No. 174 ‘On establishment of the Chornobyl radiation-ecological biosphere reserve’ comes into effect, which aims to preserve the natural state of the most typical natural Polissia reserves, providing support and improving the barrier function of the Chornobyl exclusion zone and zone of ultimate (obligatory) resettlement, the stabilization of the hydrological regime and the rehabilitation of territories contaminated with radio nuclides, contribution to the organization and carrying out of international scientific researches.

The law ‘On amendments to some legislative acts concerning the settlement of the issues of legal regime of the territory, which was affected by radioactive contamination as a result of the Chornobyl disaster’ was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on July 14.
