Number of loss-making banks in Ukraine decreases in Q1 2016

The number of loss-making banks in Ukraine in January through March 2016 narrowed to 30. Some 41 and 53 banks posted losses in 2015 and 2014 respectively.

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) said on its website that total loss of the banking system in the country in Q1 2016 reached UAH 7.74 billion. Insolvent banks saw UAH 810.4 million of loss and operating banks – UAH 8.55 billion of profit.

The NBU said that banks of foreign banking groups posted UA 6.417 billion of loss or 82.9% of total loss and state-run banks – UAH 1.216 billion of loss or 15.7% of total loss.

The NBU said that VTB bank posted the largest loss in Q1 2016 – UAH 4.593 billion, as well as Prominvestbank - UAH 2.38 billion and Ukreximbank – UAH 1.357 billion.

Bank Kherschatyk saw the largest profit – UAH 538.566 million (declared insolvent on April 4, 2016) and Citibank – UAH 416.026 million.

The number of operating banks in Q1 2016 did not change, totaling 109.
