Yatseniuk calls on EU to help create fund to complement salaries of Ukrainian public officers

Ukraine's Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk has called on the European Union to help create a fund to provide financing for extra payments to Ukrainian public officers, in addition to their fixed salaries.

He made the request when speaking at the International Anti-Corruption Conference in Kyiv on Monday.

"We need assistance in order to root out corruption. We have to introduce a fund within the next two years for the purpose of stimulating public officers, one that will pay extra money to our prosecutors, judges, customs officers and [other] public officers who will be really implementing reforms and not be engaged in corruption schemes," Yatseniuk said.

It is impossible to defeat corruption in a country where the monthly salary of a public officer amounts to $100, he said.

Yatseniuk also expressed hopes for the prompt appointment of an anti-corruption prosecutor, adding that he stands for the most stringent and radical judicial reform possible.
