Jaresko welcomes statement of U.S. Treasury Secretary supporting Ukraine's debt restructuring

The Finance Minister of Ukraine Natalie Jaresko has welcomed the statement of U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew saying that the holders of Ukraine's debt may need to make sacrifices.

"Everyone should be ready to sacrifice on the issue," she wrote on her Twitter page on Wednesday.

Lew, while commenting on Ukraine's negotiations with the holders of the Ukrainian debt who are not ready to write off a part of the debt, said "I think the [Ukraine] situation is one in which there is going to need to be a combination of commitment to make the kind of sacrifice for this to work and also enlightened self-interest."

On May 18, Lew released a statement following the signing of a $1 billion U.S. loan guarantee agreement for Ukraine in Kyiv.

"Since we signed our first loan guarantee agreement one year ago, Ukraine has worked closely with the IMF, the World Bank, the United States, and other members of the international community to implement a robust reform program that will help stabilize Ukraine’s economy and lay the groundwork for future growth and prosperity," Lew said.

"While Ukraine continues along the path of economic reform, we have been working with our international partners to redouble efforts to support full implementation of the Minsk agreements, including by imposing costs on Russia for its aggressive acts in eastern Ukraine," reads the statement.
