2 min read

Ukraine supplied 7.7 million tonnes of grain worth $1.9 billion to the EU market in 2012, the press service of the Agricultural Policy and Food Ministry has reported.

Egypt and Saudi Arabia also remain leaders in terms of imports of Ukrainian grain. This year Ukraine plans to expand grain markets and increase exports.

"Last year was very successful for Ukraine in terms of the consolidation of its positions on foreign markets. Therefore, we not only ensured food security in the state, but also managed to secure our status as a reliable partner. A sign of this is the fact that European countries started actively buying domestic grain crops, which doubted their quality five years ago. In 2012, the EU purchased 7.7 million tonnes of grain worth $1.9 billion, becoming the largest importer of Ukrainian grain," Agricultural Policy and Food Minister Mykola Prysiazhniuk said.

Egypt is in second place in terms of domestic grain imports, buying 5.5 million tonnes of grain for $1.4 billion last year. Saudi Arabia is third, after it exported 1.9 million tonnes of grain worth $509 million.

As for sunflower oil, Ukraine is continuing to retain first place in the world in terms of its trade. The share of the country on the world market is 50%. Ukraine also provides nearly 13% of world corn exports, ranking fourth. The country is also the world's eighth largest exporter of wheat and the fourth largest exporter of barley.
