Boryspil airport, wants for flight safety, closure of landfills near airfield where birds gather
Kyiv's Boryspil International Airport is making efforts to ensure flight safety by calling for the removal of landfills near the airfield where birds gather.
"The Boryspil airport is fully providing flight safety under the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), including the prevention of bird strikes. However, now the ornithological service of the airline is working extra hard due to the large gatherings of birds at landfills located on territories adjacent to the airfield complex," the airport's press service said.
The airfield's surrounding territory is regularly monitored to prevent possible threats to aircraft landing and taking off.
In the past two years alone the airport has eight times applied to the respective bodies asking that they remove functioning and closed landfills within 15 kilometers of Boryspil airport.
" Boryspil airport supports a claim of the interregional Prosecutor General's Office in Kyiv region in the interests of the state on the stoppage of the operation by Eco-Service LLC of a household solid waste landfill located around two kilometers from the airport's runway," the press service said.
In turn, the airline proposed to create a working group consisting of representatives of the regional administration and Boryspil airport to select a location for a new landfill outside the 15 kilometer-zone around the airport. It is proposed to build an incinerator under the law on the key principles of the state ecological policy of Ukraine for the period until 2020.
In the past three years, 15 confirmed bird strikes with planes have occurred in over 300,000 landings and take offs.
"This statistics figure not exceed international requirements, but it could be cut by introducing the above-mentioned proposals," the airport's press service said.
Boryspil International Airport is the main airport of the country and services 65% of the passenger air traffic in Ukraine. It is the only airport in Ukraine from which intercontinental flights are performed.
